Hi Frank now that ad is old!! I recently went to Sydney and was on the lookout for some old ads and I really didn’t see one which is such a shame. It’s a great idea of yours to capture all the old ads, I love it!!!

Hope you are well, cheers for now…
    Mal 🙂

The overlapping ads immediately call to mind one of my favorite songs from childhood:

When I was walking down the street, a billboard caught my eye.
The advertisements written there would make you laugh and cry.
The sign was torn and tattered from the storm the night before,
And as I gazed upon it, well, this is what I saw:

Smoke Coca-Cola cigarettes. Drink Wrigley’s Spearmint beer.
Ken-L-Ration dog food makes your wife’s complexion clear.
Chew chocolate-covered mothballs—they’re sure to satisfy.
Brush your teeth with Lifebuoy soap and watch the suds go by.

    Hey Frank,
This is the one that Colossal Media have done their new Mini ad over:

You know, although I appreciate the work that is done to restore old ads (I’ve on occasion photographed restorations), I prefer when they are left alone. It is all part of the “fading” process that I like to document. In Portuguese it is called “desvanecimento” or “descolorirá” – a word I encountered in the Brazilian hit by Toquinho called “Aquarela.”

      Aquarela

      (Toquinho)

      Lyric:

      Numa folha qualquer
      Eu desenho um sol amarelo
E com cinco ou seis retas
      É fácil fazer um castelo
Corro o lápis em torno da mão
      E me dou uma luva
      E se faço chover
Com dois riscos tenho um guarda chuva
      Se um pinguinho de tinta
Cai num pedacinho azul do papel
      Num instante imagino
Uma linda gaivota a voar no céu
      Vai voando,
Contornando a imensa curva norte sul
      Vou com ela viajando
      Havaí, Pequim ou Istambul
      Pinto um barco a vela,
      Branco, navegando,
É tanto céu e mar num beijo azul
      Entre as nuvens vem surgindo
Um lindo avião rosa e grená
      Tudo em volta colorindo
      Com suas luzes a piscar
Basta imaginar e ele está partindo,
      Sereno, lindo,
      E, se a gente quiser,
      Ele vai pousar
      Numa folha qualquer
Eu desenho um sol de partida
      Com alguns bons amigos
Bebendo de bem com a vida
      De uma América a outra
      Consigo passar num segundo
      Giro um simples compasso
E num círculo eu faço o mundo
      Um menino caminha
      E caminhando chega num muro
      E ali logo em frente
A esperar pela gente o futuro está
      E o futuro é uma astronave
      Que tentamos pilotar
      Não tem tempo nem piedade
      Nem tem hora de chegar
      Sem pedir licença
      Muda nossa vida
      E depois convida
      A rir ou chorar
      Nessa estrada não nos cabe
Conhecer ou ver o que virá
      O fim dela ninguém sabe
Bem ao certo onde vai dar
      Vamos todos numa linda passarela
      De uma aquarela
      Que um dia enfim
      Descolorirá
      Numa folha qualquer
      Eu desenho um sol amarelo
      (que descolorirá)
E com cinco ou seis retas
      É fácil fazer um castelo
      (que descolorirá)
      Giro um simples compasso
E num círculo eu faço o mundo
      (que descolorirá)
Corro o lápis em torno da mão
      E me dou uma luva
      (que descolorirá)

      Translation:

      Lyric:

      In any leaf
      I draw a yellow sun
And with five or six straight
It is easy to make a castle
Run the pencil around the hand
      And give me a glove
And if I make it rain
With two risks have an umbrella
      If a pinguinho Ink
Get a piece of blue paper
      In a moment imagine
A beautiful seagull flying in the sky
      Vai flying,
Bypassing the huge curve north south
      I travel with it
      Hawaii, Beijing and Istanbul
      Pinto a boat to sail,
      White, sailing,
It is both a sea and sky blue kiss
      Has emerged from the clouds
A beautiful pink and airplane Grenå
      All around coloring
      With its lights flashing
Just imagine and he is starting,
      Serene, beautiful,
      And if you want,
      He will land
      In any leaf
      I design from the sun
      With some good friends
      Drinking of well with life
      From an American to another
      I can spend a second
      Giro a simple bar
And I make a circle the world
      A boy walks
And walking comes in a wall
      And there right in front
The people wait for the future is
And the future is a astronave
      We try to fly
      No time or piety
      Neither has time to reach
      Without asking permission
      Change your life
      And then calls
      A laugh or cry
On this road we must not
      Know or see what will
The end of it nobody knows
Well for sure where to go
Let us all in a beautiful bridge
      A watercolor
      That one day last
      Decolor
      In any leaf
      I draw a yellow sun
      (which discolor)
And with five or six straight
It is easy to make a castle
      (which discolor)
      Giro a simple bar
And I make a circle the world
      (which discolor)
Run the pencil around the hand
      And give me a glove
      (which discolor)

Google translation leaves to be desired.
