On another Vespa tour through Boro Park, Saul Rendelstein, Inc. (quite possibly Sigmund Rendelstein- Ancestry.com) was pointed out to me by Vincenzo. Further searching at Ancestry turned up this thread that suggests Rendelstein hailed from Kozova, Galicia – which is now Ukraine. Still no clue as to what goods this corporation produced. Any leads?

  1. There are several New York Times archive articles that mention Saul Rendelstein, Inc. in the late 1920s-1930s period. Unfortunately they must be purchased. But Google Search revealed a few free hints as to the type of company. Rendelstein sued Wengenroth Builders in 1931. Rendelstein is mentioned in another article associated with debt collection from construction companies.

The one-story brick building provides another clue. The multiple truck loading doors represents a warehouse type of construction. My guess, without spending money on New York Times articles, is that Rendelstein operated a lumber supply business, likely involving the sale of millwork (doors, windows, trim) to builders who sometimes failed to pay him.

I have been doing RENDELSTEIN genealogical research for the past 32 years. It is my father’s paternal family name. The RENDELSTEIN family ALL came from an area within a 35 mile radius of the town of Kozova, Galicia (now Ukraine).

Saul was in the plumbing supply business. And, I believe that he was also into some real estate speculation.

Yes–it was the plumbing supply business. He was my grandfather, although we never met.
