My father worked for Beekman for over 40 years. Including when you started until almost the end. Any memories of Herbert Hausman?

        Hi Deborah,

I knew your father. My husband Mel Berns who worked at Beekamn also for many years spoke of him often about how nice a person and how good a salesman he was. I was shocked when I heard Beekman closed. Beekman was once a major company in its field when Ted Greenberg and Nat Poli ran it. Do you know what happened?

        1. Deborah Klein says:

          Good Afternoon Dianne,

My dad left Beekman and worked at a larger firm in Long Island City for about three years before he retired. I know he would never have willingly left Beekman after over 40 years with them without realizing that they were on the way out.

I faintly remember Nat Poli, but it was Peter Poli, his son, that I knew best. From listening to Dad, who never had a bad word to say about anyone, he wasn’t the “businessman” that his father and grandfather had been. Translation – the paper business was definitely in transition and if you didn’t know it inside and out, you weren’t going to last. To do things “the old way” wasn’t going to cut it. The Paper Industry, as well as Printing all seem to have moved from NY. I don’t think Beekman closing was a drastic thing, it just couldn’t continue to compete in the market.

I wish he was still around so I could show this to him. He loved working at Beekman and with the people there, and I don’t think he realized that he would live on in a lot of memories.

Thank you so much for writing!

          – Deborah
