  1. The East River plant is one of seven Con Edison plants: five in Manhattan and one each in Queens and Brooklyn. Coal was the original fuel for Con Edison’s predecessor the New York Edison Company. In the early 1900s Con Edison built a vast storage yard for coal at Shadyside, NJ. At the time Shadyside, now called Edgewater, was a large industrial complex sited along the Hudson River opposite Grant’s Tomb in Manhattan. The coal yard was somewhat remote from the power plants of the company, but New York City land was too expensive and railroad connections were not available at any of the plants. The coal was delivered to the power plants by boats loaded at Shadyside. Oil and natural gas eventually replaced coal to reduce pollution in the city.
