Hello – my father Joe worked here for many, many years. I have fond memories of the sweets he would bring home, since it was a wholesale supplier for many newsstands. I especially liked the special “premiums” that the companies sent to Mandel like the Mister Peanut bank and other goodies. The neighborhood was unsafe back then. When I was older my parents shared that he was “pistol-whipped” a couple of times before he decided it was enough and left the LES.
Wow Melanie- Thank you for sharing that family memory. I also remember when the LES was a tougher neighborhood. It had a working-class feel that was honest and gritty. Amazing how things change. That’s what NYC is all about- CHANGE.
