Blind Privilege (written around the time of Virginia Tech Massacre).

On her CBS video-blog, Katie Couric divides the world into two categories of people- Those who rinse their dishes before putting them in the dishwasher- and those who don’t. Excuse me Katie- that reductionist & elitist metaphor illustrates that problem with today’s media commentators- blind privilege.

As we grapple for meaning after the Virginia Tech massacre -the right-wing media – CNN’s sensationalist Glenn Beck – talks about morality with a Christian panel whose underlying message is as contentious as always- family values. In a culture that supports anti-gay discrimination, where  “parents of faith” throw out and shun their gay, lesbian, bisexual, questioning and transgendered children in the name of morality-  the problem isn’t Quentin Tarantino desensitizing us to violence.

This building is on Broadway walking away from the Williamsburg Bridge.  Not quite sure if it is still decorated this way. This was one of the stops on our walking tour in early 2001.
