Jump<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Gandhi and Rustin<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>With assistance from the\u00a0Quaker group the\u00a0American Friends Service Committee and inspired by Gandhi&#8217;s success with non-violent activism, King visited\u00a0Gandhi&#8217;s birthplace in India in 1959.\u00a0\u00a0The trip to India affected King in a profound way, deepening his understanding of\u00a0non-violent resistance and his commitment to America&#8217;s struggle for civil rights. In a radio address made during his final evening in India, King reflected, &#8220;Since being in India, I am more convinced than ever before that the method of nonviolent resistance is the most potent weapon available to oppressed people in their struggle for justice and human dignity. In a real sense, Mahatma Gandhi embodied in his life certain universal principles that are inherent in the moral structure of the universe, and these principles are as inescapable as the law of gravitation.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>African American civil rights activist\u00a0Bayard Rustin had studied Gandhi&#8217;s teachings.\u00a0\u00a0Rustin counseled King to dedicate himself to the principles of non-violence,\u00a0\u00a0served as King&#8217;s main advisor and mentor throughout his early activism,\u00a0\u00a0and was the main organizer of the 1963 March on Washington.\u00a0Rustin&#8217;s open\u00a0homosexuality, support of\u00a0democratic socialism, and his former ties to the\u00a0Communist Party USA caused many white and African-American leaders to demand King distance himself from Rustin. &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Luther_King,_Jr.\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.deeppencil.com\/martin-luther-king-jr-had-a-gay-mentor\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fadingad.com\/blog\/bayard-rustin-with-martin-luther-king-jr-in-1956-d1.jpeg?resize=570%2C866\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"866\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr &amp; Bayard Rustin &#8211; deeppencil dot com<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Before meeting King, Rustin was a founder of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) which was formed in 1942. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>CORE was conceived as a Pacifist organization based on the writings of Henry David Thoreau and modeled after Mohandas Gandhi&#8217;s non-violent resistance against British rule in India.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>These principles of non-violence became the backbone of the SCLC and the personal philosophy of Dr King.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.deeppencil.com\/martin-luther-king-jr-had-a-gay-mentor\/\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Luther King Jr Had a Gay Mentor<\/a> <\/em>&#8211; <strong>deeppencil dot com<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fading Ad Campaign &#8211; \u00a9 Frank H.
