Jump<\/p>\n<p>Creative Writing teacher Gen Berretta invited the <a href=\"http:\/\/forchrisrose.tripod.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Christopher Rose Community Empowerment Campaign<\/i><\/a> to our school, P.S. 119 The Amersfort School of Social Awareness on Avenue K in Brooklyn. If you don&#8217;t remember, Christopher Rose was the young boy who was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/07\/04\/nyregion\/04ipod.html\" target=\"_blank\">killed for his <i>iPod<\/i><\/a> in 2005  on Farragut Road in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Since, his mother Sharon Rose and family have created an organization in Christopher&#8217;s memory to foster community activism and raise awareness against gang influence on our youth.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Helvetica, Verdana, Arial\" size=\"2\">The Christopher Rose Community Empowerment Campaign will aim to mobilize community stakeholders and others for support and involvement in activities to increase community awareness of the following: <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Helvetica, Verdana, Arial\" size=\"2\">                                             <\/font><\/p>\n<div> <font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Helvetica, Verdana, Arial\" size=\"2\">                                             <\/font><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Helvetica, Verdana, Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2022 The factors that contribute to youth violence<br \/>\n\u2022 Occurrences of violence<br \/>\n\u2022 The impact of violence<br \/>\n\u2022 Strategies for preventing delinquency of adolescents that leads to youth gang involvement and community violence<\/font><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gang-intervention.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gang-intervention.org\/adfghh.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"What Color Should I Die For?\" height=\"375\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>This poem was read by one of our students:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<blockquote><p>What color should I die for?<br \/>\nBlue?<br \/>\nRed?<br \/>\nor<br \/>\nGold?<br \/>\nHow old do I grow before my love of the color grows cold?<br \/>\nHelp me choose a symbol my friend can die for.<br \/>\nThe star?<br \/>\nA Hat?<br \/>\nOr<br \/>\na  hand sign?<br \/>\nIt all makes sense?<br \/>\nWho wouldn&#8217;t die for a color or symbol?<br \/>\nI would&#8230;&#8230;wouldn&#8217;t I?<br \/>\nYou can&#8230;won&#8217;t you?<br \/>\nMy baby brother should&#8230;.. shouldn&#8217;t he?<br \/>\nAre these symbols that hold us together, the meaning of life?<br \/>\nIs a color as important as Freedom or a symbol and hand sign as virtuous as Love.<br \/>\nStop!<br \/>\nWhat madness have we created.<br \/>\nWe fight and die for issues of no meaning.<br \/>\nGang Life has no future.<br \/>\nNo Profit.<br \/>\nNo virtue.<br \/>\nNo worthy goals.<br \/>\nI choose a life with a future.<br \/>\nI reject mindless commitments to meaningless issues<br \/>\nand conflicts that gang life offers me.<br \/>\nWhy should I serve or follow these men who create conflict and hate to the point that it spirals out of control.<br \/>\nYesterday you were my friend and today you are my enemy because they say you are.<br \/>\nRubbish!<br \/>\nI will choose my friends, my future, my destiny.<br \/>\nYes I would die for Freedom.<br \/>\nNo I won&#8217;t die for your special color,<br \/>\nsymbol, hand sign, or street corner.<br \/>\nWhat kind of brotherhood would ask me to do such a thing?<br \/>\nI reject Gang Life and choose&#8230;<br \/>\nLife!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p align=\"right\"> DTL &#8211; <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gang-intervention.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gang <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gang-intervention.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Intervention.org<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sharon Rose (mother), Darryl Matthis (family friend) &amp; Xamayla Rose (sister) in our library raising awareness about the insidiousness of gang influence on urban youth.
