David Goodman<\/strong> wrote a<a href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/26\/fading-ads-pickled-in-pixels\/\" target=\"_blank\"> wonderful article that focuses on what I have coined &#8220;fading ads&#8221;<\/a> and the work of the veteran urban archaeologist &#8211; <strong>Walter Grutchfield <\/strong>of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.14to42.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">14to42 website<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Before I started \u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.frankjump.com\" target=\"_blank\">The Fading Ad Campaign<\/a><\/strong> in 1997, these urban palimpsests were known as <em>ghost signs<\/em>. In an attempt to raise them from the dead, I used the term <em>fading ads<\/em> since I was wrestling with my own mortality with HIV\/AIDS and drawing parallels to these signs&#8217; unexpected long life and my own. I see them as metaphors of survival rather than a spectral afterglow of capitalism&#8217;s castoffs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">In 1999 when I launched my website, I realized I belonged to a community of urban archaeologist that included the likes of <strong>William Stage (Riverfront Times &amp; Ghost Signs)<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lileks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>James Lileks<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/lileks.com\/bleat\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>(The Bleat)<\/strong><\/a>, <strong> Kevin Walsh <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forgotten-ny.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>(Forgotten-NY)<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.14to42.net\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Walter Grutchfield<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; all of whom were supportive of my early online presence. Since then, a wave of documentation has occurred on both sides of the Atlantic with <strong>Sam Roberts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghostsigns.co.uk\/blog\" target=\"_blank\">UK Brick Ads<\/a><\/strong> in London and other micro sites in the US from <strong>Lawrence O&#8217;Toole&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawrenceotoole.com\/signs\/signs.html\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia Ghost Sign Project<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"http:\/\/vanishingnewyork.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jeremiah&#8217;s Vanishing NY.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Fading Ad Blog, among other notable blogs on the subject &#8211; was mentioned again by the NY Times.
