By NATALIE ANGIER<br \/>\nPublished: October 23, 2007<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bad Dreams Are Good<\/strong><br \/>\nby <a href=\"http:\/\/jonimitchell.com\/musician\/song.cfm?id=BadDreams\" target=\"_blank\">Joni Mitchell <\/a><br \/>\nAs published in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/fiction\/poetry\/2007\/09\/17\/070917po_poem_mitchell\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>New Yorker<\/em><\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nSeptember 17, 2007<\/p>\n<p>The cats are in the flower beds<br \/>\nA red hawk rides the sky<br \/>\nI guess I should be happy<br \/>\nJust to be alive<br \/>\nBut<br \/>\nWe have poisoned everything<br \/>\nAnd oblivious to it all<br \/>\nThe cell-phone zombies babble<br \/>\nThrough the shopping malls<br \/>\nWhile condors fall from Indian skies<br \/>\nWhales beach and die in sand<br \/>\nBad Dreams are good<br \/>\nIn the Great Plan<\/p>\n<p>And you cannot be trusted<br \/>\nDo you even know you are lying?<br \/>\nIt\u2019s dangerous to kid yourself<br \/>\nYou go deaf, dumb, and blind<br \/>\nYou take with such entitlement<br \/>\nYou give bad attitude<br \/>\nYou have No grace<br \/>\nNo empathy<br \/>\nNo gratitude<br \/>\nYou have no sense of consequence<br \/>\nOh, my head is in my hands<br \/>\nBad Dreams are good<br \/>\nIn the Great Plan<\/p>\n<p>Before that altering apple<br \/>\nWe were one with everything<br \/>\nNo sense of self and other<br \/>\nNo self-consciousness<br \/>\nBut now we have to grapple<br \/>\nWith this man-made world backfiring<br \/>\nKeeping one eye on our brother\u2019s deadly selfishness<\/p>\n<p>Everyone\u2019s a victim here<br \/>\nNobody\u2019s hands are clean<br \/>\nThere\u2019s so very little left of wild Eden Earth<br \/>\nSo near the jaws of our machines<br \/>\nWe live in these electric scabs<br \/>\nThese lesions once were lakes<br \/>\nWe don\u2019t know how to shoulder blame<br \/>\nOr learn from past mistakes<br \/>\nSo who will come to save the day?<br \/>\nMighty Mouse. . . ?
