Nafziger expanded the bakeries and bought out competitors. In 1925 he sold Nafziger Bakeries to Purity Bakeries\u00a0(which in turn became American Bakeries). Using his fortune he acquired a controlling interest in\u00a0<a title=\"Schulze Baking Company\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schulze_Baking_Company\" target=\"_blank\">Schulze Baking Company<\/a>\u00a0and its Butternut Bread brand.<sup id=\"cite_ref-hogan1_8-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hostess_Brands#cite_note-hogan1-8\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>In 1930 he announced the formation\u00a0<b>Interstate Bakeries Corporation<\/b>\u00a0(IBC) with the merger of the Schulze Bakery with seven bakers under the umbrella of Western Bakeries of Los Angeles.
