Roberts was drawn to this &#8220;quirky&#8221; form of hand-painted advertising while he and his wife Gilly were doing humanitarian work with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ourvso.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO)<\/a>\u00a0in Cambodia.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>While the signs have experienced something of a resurgence in the last three decades, they now face another demise, this time at the hands of technological and economic development. In this respect,\u00a0<a title=\"About author Sam Roberts\" href=\"http:\/\/kratie.ghostsigns.co.uk\/author\/\">author Sam Roberts<\/a>\u00a0draws parallels with his interest in\u00a0<a title=\"Ghostsigns home page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ghostsigns.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Ghostsigns\u2019<\/a>, the fading remains of advertising painted on buildings in his native UK: \u201cThe loss of hand-painted signs marks a distinct period in countries\u2019 economic development. It is the point at which access to technology and rising labour costs tip the balance in favour of mechanical or digital formats.
