    As a native North Carolinian, let me be the first to say that the death of Jessie Helms should be a national holiday. (I guess since he died on July 4th, it actually is.) He was definitely one of the most hateful people in politics and an embarrassment to any southerner.

    One of my favorite comedians is a guy named Zach Galifianakis. Zach’s from North Carolina and many years ago his uncle Nick Galifianakis ran against Jessie Helms for a seat in the Senate. The slogan for the Helms campaign was “Jesse Helms. He’s One of Us.” This was a jab at Galifianakis’ Greek-American background. Helms was really an equal opportunity hater…
