Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr – Gandhi & Rustin

Gandhi and Rustin

With assistance from the Quaker group the American Friends Service Committee and inspired by Gandhi’s success with non-violent activism, King visited Gandhi’s birthplace in India in 1959.  The trip to India affected King in a profound way, deepening his understanding of non-violent resistance and his commitment to America’s struggle for civil rights. In a radio address made during his final evening in India, King reflected, “Since being in India, I am more convinced than ever before that the method of nonviolent resistance is the most potent weapon available to oppressed people in their struggle for justice and human dignity. In a real sense, Mahatma Gandhi embodied in his life certain universal principles that are inherent in the moral structure of the universe, and these principles are as inescapable as the law of gravitation.”

African American civil rights activist Bayard Rustin had studied Gandhi’s teachings.  Rustin counseled King to dedicate himself to the principles of non-violence,  served as King’s main advisor and mentor throughout his early activism,  and was the main organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. Rustin’s open homosexuality, support of democratic socialism, and his former ties to the Communist Party USA caused many white and African-American leaders to demand King distance himself from Rustin. – Wikipedia

Before meeting King, Rustin was a founder of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) which was formed in 1942.

CORE was conceived as a Pacifist organization based on the writings of Henry David Thoreau and modeled after Mohandas Gandhi’s non-violent resistance against British rule in India.

These principles of non-violence became the backbone of the SCLC and the personal philosophy of Dr King.

An MP from the Faroe Islands has refused to attend a state banquet held in honour of Icelandic prime minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir’s official visit.

The prime minister of the Faroe Islands, Kaj Leo Johannesen, invited all seven of the Faroe Island’s party leaders to dine with Ms Sigurðardóttir and her wife, Jonina Leonsdottir. However, Jenis av Rana MP, leader of The Centre Party, a Christianity-based conservative party, declined the invitation, reportedly saying it was against his religion and that he wouldn’t “dream of attending such a banquet”. – Pink News UK

Boycott Target! Contributes $150,000 to Anti-Gay Gubernatorial Candidate Thomas Emmer of Minnesota

© Frank H. Jump

Target, practically everyone’s favorite discount retail store, is headquartered in Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes. But along with precious bodies of water, Minnesota is home to some pretty rabid anti-gay politicians and groups. Among them include Tom Emmer. And Target, it seems, is apparently filling his campaign coffers with nearly $150,000.

Follow the money. At least, that’s the message delivered by an article at sfist.com by Matt Baume, who tracks $150,000 from Target’s coffers, through a political action committee (PAC) known as Minnesota Forward, all the way to Tom Emmer, who himself supports a Christian rock band in Minnesota that travels around the state saying that it’s moral and righteous for religious people to kill gays and lesbians.

For those into algebra, it looks a little like this: Target + Minnesota Forward + Tom Emmer = Support for a rather dangerous and radical political philosophy that diminishes LGBT people to pests that should be murdered. And Target is cool with this?

Send the company a message right now, urging them to explain why their money is being used to fund a politics that not only serves to prevent LGBT equality, but breeds homophobia, transphobia and hatred. – Change dot org via Facebook

Day 1: Chapters 1-4 (January 11th, 2010)

Visit Marriage Trial dot com for further exhibits and resources!

ABOUT THE MARRIAGE TRIAL PROJECT (taken from their website):

In its January 13, 2010 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the public broadcast of Perry v. Schwarzenegger, a U.S. District Court case challenging the constitutional validity of California’s Proposition 8.

Working from court transcripts and first-hand accounts from bloggers who are present at the trial, we are re-enacting the trial and posting it here for public viewing.

John Ireland and John Ainsworth are co-producing this project under JIP, LLC a production company based in Hollywood.

For more information: email them, follow them on Twitter or subscribe to their YouTube channel.

Production Costs

“If you support what we are doing, please consider contributing, to help us cover costs. All of the actors, producers and others behind the scenes are volunteering our time and our resources are limited. Your gift will help us to complete our work. Thanks!” – Marriage Trial dot com

MarriageTrial.com profiled on Bill Moyers Journal

They battled it out as legal adversaries in 2000 before the Supreme Court in Bush v. Gore. But what’s got these two prominent lawyers – one conservative and one liberal – working together in court now? Theodore Olson, one of the nation’s premier appellate and United States Supreme Court advocates and David Boies, one of the country’s preeminent trial lawyers, argued opposite sides for the fate of the 2000 election but are now teamed up in the fight to overturn California’s Proposition 8 ballot measure outlawing same-sex marriage. The unexpected pair discusses why they’ve taken on the hot-button issue – even as some gay rights activists objected – and why they don’t believe that same-sex marriage is a right or left issue.
