Here is a simply outstanding piece of advertising memorabilia in the form of an Ayer’s oval pillbox containing three original petrified cathartic pills. This box is made of a very thin (balsa?) wood with a paper label covering the box. The trademark date is July 1883, manufactured by J.C. Ayer & Co. Lowell Ma. – Ruby Lane

On a website called The Museum of Menstruation, there’s a tongue-in-cheek anecdote taken from a 1904 women’s medical journal called “The 20th Century Song Book”: “Menstrual, kidney & liver problems, constipation & bowels, tiredness, indigestion, colic, colds, chills, fever, childbirth, rheumatism, arthritis, menarche, leuchorrhea, dizziness, pain, headache, Cardui, Wine of Cardui, tonic, ‘female weakness,’ etc.” Perhaps this should be sung to a popular “list song” tune like the “Twelve Days of Christmas” or Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” – Fading Ads of New York City (History Press, 2011) © Frank H. Jump

According to The Mary Frans Muse Weebly:

In 1880 Dr. McElree’s Wine of Cardui was introduced, a menstrual relief product for women . To maintain the company’s building reputation for quality, the new product was delivered to customers with the agreement that they would pay for it only if fully satisfied with its results. Wine of Cardui immediately became successful, as more than 6,500 women reported cures and sent payment to the company for an initial shipment of 7,000 bottles…. The Company was founded as the Chattanooga Medicine Company on February 21, 1879. It began operations in a small unpretentious 2-story brick building located on a muddy, unpaved road called Market Street in the heart of downtown Chattanooga. At the time, the city of Chattanooga consisted of fewer than 10,000 people whose occupations often centered around the railroad and thriving river port.

Lee’s Save The Baby – More Misbranded Nostrums from Our Not-So-Distant Past

Etsy

I stayed home from work today with a cough and low-grade fever. I called my dad and he remembered when he was young his mom would run to the cabinet for Lee’s Save the Baby. So I was intrigued by his story and decided to investigate this brand. From entries in the 1962 The Medical Messiahs: A Social History of Medical Quackery in 20th Century America to medical journals as early as 1918, it is evident how a Federal agency was developed for the protection of the public from cure all brands like Lee’s Save The Baby.

Yet even as late as 1973, nostalgia for a product wins over efficacy.

Old Fulton History – Tom Trysnicki – Troy NY Times Record – January, 1973

Lee’s Save The Baby was a regional New York State brand that gained popularity as far a Massachusetts. Looking at the ingredients, how much different is it from let’s say a Tiger Balm or Vicks Vaporub except the substitute for lard with petroleum.

This is a stretch but I am making a leap of faith that the GRANDAS on this pentimento is associated with the Montreal resident Jose Granda – cigar maker – immigrant from Spain. Below is the obituary of his daughter Mary Cook.

Obituary

COOK, Mary (nee Granda) August 10th, 1924 – October 13th, 2012

Passed away at Father Dowd Memorial Home at the age of eighty-eight after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. Mary’s late father, Jose Granda, and his brothers were among the first immigrants from Spain to settle in Montreal in 1900 as founding partners in Jose Granda Cigars Ltd on St-Laurent Boulevard. She was predeceased by her brothers Pepe, Adolpho, Armando, Domingo and John, and by her sisters Feliz, Blanca, Luz and Paulina.

Beloved wife of Mr. Douglas James Cook and devoted mother to Linda (Bill Dalziel), Eric (Kathleen Casey) and Nina (Peter Walker). Loving Tita to Ryan, Kristin, Michael, Morgan, Andrew, Stuart, Michael, Maria, Evan and Casey. She will be greatly missed by her great-granddaughter Maya, her nieces and nephews as well as many other relatives and friends.

Family will receive condolences at Kane and Fetterly Funeral Home (5301, Decarie Boulevard (corner Isabella), Montreal, H3W 3C4) on Friday, November 2nd from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St-Ignatius Parish (4455 West Broadway, Montreal) on Saturday, November 3rd at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Alzheimer Society would be appreciated.
