I worked for Evans Amityville Dairy1957-1965. Wondering if anyone has any information about th Evans Family. Willet H. Evans was the owner at that time. I think W.M. Evans was his Father. Mrs Greer who was the Office Manager was with the Dairy for many many years. Would love any Info. Thank Colina Carubia

    1. Walt says:

My Dad worked for Mr. Evans for many years as a landscape contractor during the 1950s and into the early 60s. Mr. Evans had a home in Rockville Centre and a vacation home in the Thousand Islands. After his wife died of cancer he remarried and moved to a home on Cherry Valley Road in Garden City. He was a great customer and I remember he invited Dad over for a drink with another landscaper one evening.

I remember how Mr Evans said that when he was young he would take a team of horses and a wagon loaded with milk either to or from the Staten Island Ferry. He said the ramp leading from the ferry was very steep and he was fearful that his horses would lose their footing. dangerous to

In response to dan cohen’s question. I just picked up an old milk can today at a flea mkt. which reads on the side: EVANS AMITYVILLE DAIRY AMITYVILLE L I.So, looks like the dairy was in Long Island. Hope that helps.

When I worked for the Dairy it was at 47 Wellington Place, Amityville N.Y. It was a rather large operation. Wholsale and retail. Home deliveries and a large number of employees. There were other branches but Amityville was where they pastureized, bottled and delivered from. I would be interested in any info on the family.

Is the Evans Dairy the same as Holland Farms? I have the Evans address at Fulton Street for Holland Farms, but seem to remember Holland Farms as being located in Long Island City. My father worked at Holland Farms until about 1960, after about 20 years.

  8. Matt says:

My family has owned 47 Wellington place in amityville for over 50 years now. We have tons of old bottles from when it was dairy. No clue about the family, havent heard anything in many many years. 47 Wellington was a HUGE building

    1. colina carubia says:

Hi Matt…I would love to get a hold of one Evans Bottle. I have many memories since I worked for Evans 8 yrs right out of H.S. Did your family own the building after the Dairy closed or during It’s operation? I passed it recently and saw apartment, that would have really shocked Willet H. Evans….He’s been gone many years.

My grandfather worked for WM Evans in the period 1915-1925-ish. He was the youngest of 12 children who grew up on a farm in Chatham, NY, and moved to the big city as a young man, where he took care of the Evans Dairy horses that delivered the milk in wagons. My grandmother worked in the Evans Dairy office until she died in childbirth around 1925. That left my grandpa a widow with 2 daughters. They really thought a lot of the Evans family, and we have old photos of Mr and Mrs Evans and son Willet as a child in the family collection. My mom and her parents also lived in Rockville Centre, but then had to move afte rmy grandmother died.
I fond a milk bottle on Ebay – they are there if you keep looking.

  15. Colina Carubia says:

How very interesting..all these entries. It so nice to hear from people who in some way were connected with The Dairy. Does anyone remember Ruth L. Greer.? She was Willet’s Sec/bookkeeper. She worked there for many years and was close to the family and Oh how she worried about Willet for on occasion he would come in after having a few Cocktails. We as teenagers at the time thought it to be Hilarious but our main concern was that he made it in to sign our check’s and he always did. My first week’s pay was $32.00 before taxes…I thought I was a Millionaire.

  16. Jack Reidy says:

Ruth L. Greer was my grandfather’s sister. I think she is the one you are talking about. I never met her. I just happened to be looking for some genealogy stuff on the Greers and stumbled across this.

I live on an old farmstead in brookhaven new york and found this page very helpful. thank you. this morning i was actually researching the people who once lived here, there were only three families that lived on this property, mine being the third, so only two before. The first lived here the early part of the century. As symmetry would have it, just after i paused my research, I walked my dog in the woods next to the house and found an old small glass milk bottle, Evans Creamery Inc, Amityville LI. I imagine that the person I was reading about on line today, used that bottle. It’s a very strong probability. A haunting in Brookhaven, Halloween week. I am assuming the dairy may have also been called a creamery but not sure if this may have been before or after. The markings (lettering/font) on the bottle are very Victorian. And there is a little cow in the mold. It’s sweet and is sitting on my mantel right now.

    1. fadingad says:

What a fascinating story! Send me a picture of the bottle and I’ll repost this with your additional text! Best, Frank

  19. Marlana says:

I’ve gotten the same milk bottle that says w.m Evans. It has E X on the bottom?? Is it worth anything??

  20. Carla Smith says:

AJLA, would be be able to send me a copy of that picture? Somehow the Evans are related to us, and I am trying to track the geneology down. I have a very distant picture of Willet and Elizabeth, but would like one more “close up”. My email is smith_carlaj@hotmail.com. Thanks!!
